With the 17th overall pick in the 2021 Bleeding Green Nation community mock draft, Las Vegas Raiders GM dshelton5 selects ... Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB, Notre Dame
The Player
Most people have Micah Parsons out of Penn St. as the first linebacker off the board and with good reason, the guy is a freak of nature. But I think in a few years we could be looking back at Jermiah Owusu-Koramoah, or the Joker as we might come to know him, out of Notre Dame as not only the best linebacker, but the best defensive player in this year’s draft. Why? Because his game is perfectly suited for today’s NFL. The Joker is really one of the most unique prospects in recent memory for me. He’s one of these new age linebackers that flies around the field at warp speed and makes plays. While impressive, that’s not all that unique, but what is special about Owusu-Koramoah is his coverage ability.

Five free agent cornerbacks who still make sense for the Eagles - PhillyVoiceThe Eagles — and this is a big one — were already very interested in acquiring him in the 2017 NFL Draft. According to Jimmy Kempski, the Eagles were actually planning on taking him (and not Derek Barnett) with the 14th pick that year, but at the time Conley was being accused of sexual assault (of which he was later cleared) and that caused him to slide down draft boards, ultimately not going until the 24th pick. Had those allegations not been hanging over him, Kempski reports that the Eagles would have drafted him instead. Of course, if those allegations weren’t hanging over his head, he also likely wouldn’t have fallen to them at 14. If the Eagles can get Conley at the right price — and assuming he’s healthy after a pair of ankle surgeries cost him the entire 2020 Collapse

More insight on Philly’s internal issues. For some, The Athletic’s reporting on the Eagles’ dysfunction validated their deep concerns about this organization. Others were quick to question the motive of the sources and point out how no work environment is without issues.
In order to get more insight on Monday’s report, Rob “Stats” Guerrera and I invited the incomparable Sheil Kapadia on this week’s episode of The ODDcast on The SB Nation NFL Show.
I strongly recommend checking out the entire exchange that starts towards the beginning of the show but I wanted to share some transcriptions for you non-listeners out there. Starting with more context on their sourcing:

2 DAYS AGO - Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports
How do you like this scenario? Correct me if I’m wrong (wouldn’t be the first time) but I feel like most Philadelphia Eagles fans would like some combination of a wide receiver and a cornerback with their first two picks in the 2021 NFL Draft. That’d be an ideal outcome considering they’re the two biggest positions of need on a roster full of holes.
Such a scenario does not play out for the Birds in Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft. The ESPN analyst instead has the Birds going defense with both of their first two selections, starting with a cornerback at No. 12 overall:
Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama
The Eagles traded out of the top 10 and moved to No. 12, which essentially took them out of the quarterback race. They could also miss out on the top wide receivers; I suspect they would jump at Waddle if he made it here. Just looking at this roster, though, corner should be a priority, and they’d have their pick of all of them if the board shakes Collapse

That really happened. But these men are destroying the good will they built up with that amazing feat by making bad football moves and bad people decisions. I hope this piece proves to be some kind of wakeup call. I’m not holding my breath, though. Lurie and Roseman need to show they can change. If not, the Eagles are going to remain a flawed organization unless they can pull off another miracle like 2017. And trust me, the further we get away from that season, the more we see it was a miracle.

With the 11th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the New York Football Giants select Jaylen Waddle. GM Dave Gettleman does the smart thing by providing QB Daniel Jones with the best offensive player available. Waddle — this year’s most highly-touted Tyreek Hill comp — will play Robin to Kenny Golladay’s Batman in what, on paper, looks like the most promising Giants offense in years. Though guys like Micah Parsons and Jaycee Horn were tempting here, it’s the success or failure of Jones and the offense that will determine whether or not Gettleman is sent packing at the end of the season.

Mailbag: Could the Eagles trade up from Round 2 into Round 1? - PhillyVoiceQuestion from Deathorglory: What’s the deal with Zach Ertz? He’s not really going to be on the team, is he? ... My understanding for months now is that Ertz is as good as gone. I haven’t heard anything in regard to changes on that front, so my assumption is that he remains as good as gone. One possibility is that the Eagles could be waiting until June 1 to move on from Ertz. If they cut or traded him now, he would count for $7,769,500 in dead money against the cap, with $4,952,000 in savings. Since the Eagles already used both of their two allotted June 1 designations on Alshon Jeffery and Malik Jackson, they would have to actually wait until June 1 to get the benefit of a June 1 release/trade with a third player. 2 HRS AGO - Photo by Lee Coleman/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images
If the Eagles have a non-wide receiver need, it is cornerback. Last year’s defensive backfield was hampered by injury, bad depth and poor play. It is crucial for the team to get quality players across from Darius Slay and in the slot to run Jonathan Gannon’s defense. Luckily, this class is deep with cornerback talent and the Eagles may be lucky enough to find two quality starters or some high upside depth. Here is how the class ranks.
1) Patrick Surtain II, Alabama
Funny enough that a lot of the best cornerbacks in this class are legacy players with dad’s who made a big impact in the NFL. Patrick Surtain was a physical playmaker for the Dolphins during his career and his son has a similar trajectory. Surtain II has immense physical talent and flashes potential as a ball hawk and run defender. He is highly experienced and still, somehow, can keep getting better.

Let’s hit the questions from our loyal readers...
@andrewcat17: Why do fans bash Howie Roseman, when really it was the QB (and coaching staff) who took massive steps backwards. Howie went all in to maximize a cheap qb, got out ahead of the market to sign him, and gave him assets (great o-line, RB, and WR draft capital).
He’s had three-consecutive poor offseasons. The last four drafts have provided few positive returns, not continuing a pipeline of talented veterans players.
As for not blaming the quarterback, man, I blamed him relentlessly! Sure, there are Carson Wentz defenders, but it’s a divisive subjective and there are TONS of fans who are (rightfully) salty about how Wentz’s final year in Philly transpired.

With the 15th overall pick in the 2021 Bleeding Green Nation community mock draft, New England Patriots GM SakPrescott selects ... Mac Jones, QB, Alabama
In this scenario, the Patriots run up to the table to take Mac Jones at 15. Cam Newton is a viable short-term option, and while I am rooting for him to succeed, you can’t count on him as your long-term QB. As a result, when a QB of Jones’ caliber is available at this point in the draft, and you don’t have a clear long-term outlook at the position, you have to strike while the iron is hot. In the actual draft, I don’t expect Jones to fall this far. While I find the rumors of Jones going to the 49ers at 3 hard to believe, I fully expect Jones to be gone by the top 10 as a result of a desperate team trading up, one of which could be New England. The constant comparisons between Jones and other top QB prospects such as Justin Fields and Trey Lance based on the rumors surrounding San Francisco Collapse

The Vikings have certainly had a series of ups and downs over the past few years. 3 DAYS AGO - New year, new look. Blogging about the Philadelphia Eagles’ draft hats is an annual tradition here at Bleeding Green Nation. So, here we are to tell you about this year’s version! Behold:
This is the hat that’ll be worn on stage (or at home) by whomever the Eagles select in the 2021 NFL Draft. And, yes, unlike last year’s entirely virtual draft, there will be in-person attendance at this year’s event in Cleveland later this month. It’ll be nice to potentially see the Eagles’ first-round selection posing with Roger Goodell and holding up a midnight green jersey while sporting this hat.
So, what do you think of the cap itself? It’s definitely ... different ... with the trucker hat mesh material going on. I feel like the “Philadelphia” text looks a little crowded. Ultimately, I don’t think it’s an upgrade on last year’s version. Am I in the minority, though? Will you be buying this year’s edition?

Why the Philadelphia Eagles could have another NFL draft trade up their sleeve - ESPNWhich brings us to a logical Step 2 in the plan: moving back up in the first round to grab one of their targeted prospects. Let’s say they’re interested in landing Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II, believing he can be a critical piece in defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s secondary-centric scheme. If they stand pat at No. 12, there’s a good chance he is scooped up before then — perhaps by the rival Dallas Cowboys at No. 10. That would sting. And there’s no guarantee South Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn will make it to them, either. The Eagles have the most picks in this year’s draft with 11, including No. 37 overall and a pair of third-rounders. There’s virtually no shot they use them all. They have the resources to move up a few slots — say, to the Collapse

Such as it is for us, the armchair general managers of billion dollar sports franchises. And sure, in a perfect world we would turn off the salary cap settings and overload our teams with generational talent at every position, but life demands the urgency of competitive play where one raises the Lombardi as a result of collective valor. I am quite sure Chargers fans would hate if the board fell like this, because their two most pressing needs are the LT and CB positions. They need to improve the offensive line to protect Justin Herbert and they addressed it in free agency signing Corey Linsley and Matt Feiler for the center and guard position, respectively.
Now, they have a hole to fill in the left tackle where they only have a couple of guys who haven’t shown enough. Also, they need to fill one of the outside cornerback positions, since Chris Harris Jr. plays as a nickel corner and Casey Hayward Jr. was released.

Wilson’s career arc is actually pretty similar to his fellow Eagles teammate Anthony Harris. Like Harris, Wilson went undrafted and didn’t play much in his first season with the Vikings. I’m not going to lie: when I got to my pick I was a little dismayed that I didn’t have the opportunity to draft one of the top 3 WRs. Ja’Marr Chase, DeVonta Smith, and Jaylen Waddle all could be great assets to our offense and help show if Jalen Hurts is truly the man to lead us into the future. Jaycee Horn is a perfectly good consolation prize, though.
Let’s start out with what stands out to me the most: this man plays the CB position like a linebacker. You will not see many more DBs who are more aggressive, physical, competitive, and willing to tackle. Horn is the kind of defender who will get in your head and hit you hard. His physicality, size, and length makes it extremely hard for receivers to create separation off the line and he’s excellent in the press.

Not exactly encouraging. If you’ve never felt more disillusioned about the Philadelphia Eagles, well, I’d say it’s hard to blame you. I’ve been there for some time now.
This is an organization that’s been on the decline ever since lifting their first Vince Lombardi Trophy and they haven’t been fully honest with themselves about why they’ve fallen from grace.
The Eagles’ actions would have you believe that moving on from Doug Pederson and Carson Wentz while keeping the front office in tact will help right the ship.
